Capture first, restore only what needs work, then split the tracks

# Top Tools for Vinyl and Cassette Audio Transfers

Capture and splitting are separate steps

Restoration has listening tradeoffs

Choose Audacity for recording a computer's audio input and editing the transfer, ocenaudio for focused waveform work with effect previews, iZotope RX for a restoration job that needs dedicated repair tools, and AudioMultiCut for splitting a captured file into tracks. The browser splitter begins after you have a digital recording; it does not connect a cassette deck or turntable to the computer.

Start by preserving a raw transfer. You can always make another set of track cuts from it, while an aggressively processed copy may hide what was in the original. This shortlist compares workflow roles, not measured restoration quality.

## Audacity: capture the audio that reaches the computer

Audacity's recording controls provide a place to capture and inspect incoming audio. Your deck or turntable still needs an appropriate connection and signal path; installing software does not supply the missing physical input. Check a short test before recording a whole side.

For a finished transfer, Audacity's Label Sounds analyzer offers threshold and quiet-gap controls. Those can help identify passages, but a quiet passage in the music can also look like a boundary. Confirm the labels and the export behavior in your installed version before treating the first pass as a track list.

## ocenaudio: audition processing while you adjust it

ocenaudio documents real-time effect previews, VST support, multiple selections, and a spectrogram. That makes it a useful desktop candidate for hearing how an EQ or filtering adjustment changes the selected part of a transfer.

Use a representative section rather than adjusting only the loudest song. Include a quiet passage and the tail of a note in your listening check. Compare the processed version with the source at a sensible level; a louder preview can be more flattering without preserving more detail.

## iZotope RX: address a specific restoration problem

RX documents dedicated modules for clicks, crackle, hum, and other recording defects. Consider it when you can name a repair task that a simple cut will not address. Check which modules belong to the edition you are considering instead of assuming every RX product includes the same tools.

Try the repair on a copy and compare a short passage before and after. Removing an impulse or continuous noise can also affect musical detail if the settings are too strong. This guide does not claim a measured winner for restoration or promise that a damaged source can be fully recovered.

## AudioMultiCut: turn the captured side into track files

Once the transfer is a digital file, open it in AudioMultiCut and mark the songs you want as separate ranges. The normal browser cutting and export workflow keeps that source on your device. Preview the beginning, last note, and gap around each selected track before export.

Use a lossless working source when available and choose the export for the next destination. MP3 is a listening copy; WAV is useful for another editing step. Cutting does not remove surface noise, and exporting a compressed source as WAV cannot restore detail lost earlier.

## Keep the raw side and a track manifest

A simple illustrative manifest has Side, Track number, Title, Start, End, and Processing notes columns. Keep it with the untouched capture and the listening exports. Note where a cut follows applause or a continuous transition so a future edit does not have to rediscover the decision.

Before processing the second side, check the first track and the final track of the first side. Verify the channels, filenames, and full endings. Then apply the same review routine, changing the treatment only when the source actually needs it.

## FAQ

### Can AudioMultiCut record a cassette or vinyl source directly?

The browser splitting workflow starts from an existing audio file. Capture the analog source through suitable hardware and recording software first, then open the digital file for cutting.

### Should I remove noise before splitting the recording?

Keep an untouched capture first. If consistent repair is needed across a side, make a reviewed working copy, then split it. Do not apply repair merely because the option exists.
